Axon Vs Dendrite:
Dendrites refer to the short structures which extend from the cell body. A nerve cell consists of many dendrites. Axon and Dendrite are quite different from each other. Axon carries nerve impulses away from the body while on the other hand dendrites carry nerve impulses from the synapses to other parts of the body.
Axon is also known as nerve and is a long slender projection of a nerve cell in the vertebrates which conducts electrical impulses named action potentials away from the nerve cell body. Axon is used to transmitting useful information to several neurons, muscles, and other glands. Afferent Nerve Fibers are those which are used for touch and warmth. These nerves travel all around the body and are associated with the spinal cord along with another axon.
Dendrite or dendrons are branched protoplasmic extensions of a nerve cell that are used to propagate the electrochemical stimulation which is received from other neural cells to the cell body of the same neuron from which the dendrites usually projects. Dendritic tree contains synapses in which the electrical stimulation is transferred from one place to another.
The main difference between Axon and Dendrite:
The following are some of the major differences between Axon and Dendrite.
- The term axon refers to a long thread-like part of a nerve cell that carries impulses away from the cell body whereas Dendrite refers to a short branched extension of nerve cells used to transmits nerve impulses to the cell body from synapses.
- In the nerve cell, there is only one axon whereas the number of dendrites is more than one in nerve cells.
- In length, axon are very long usually whereas dendrites are short in length.
- Axon usually carries impulses away from the cell body while dendrites carry impulses towards a cell body.
